PERFORMANCE HEART.
It all started summer of ‘00. I was 12 years old, preparing to enter high school, & I decided I didn’t want to be who I was anymore. (A shy girl who got bullied and couldn’t stand up for herself.) I decided to create a new version of myself - A confident, brassy & edgy teenager who gave no fucks and couldn’t be fucked with.
I ‘faked it till I maked it,’ and very quickly what had started as make-believe, was a reality. I was also a super devout Christian. In 9th grade I started attending Pentecostal gatherings & having profound spiritual experiences which, at the time, I could only understand through the lens of Christianity.
In my early 20’s, after failing to find answers to the contradictions I encountered in the Christian faith, and loosing my ‘virginity’ to a sexual assault, I left the church quite suddenly & shape shifted again, becoming a local night life aficionado, a club performer and an escort.

PERFORMANCE HEART.
My 20’s were challenging and profound years. I came out as queer, left my faith, lost my entire community, expanded my consciousness with psychedelics, & began the trip of trying to find out who I was beyond my Christian identity. Not many knew that I was struggling with intense addiction, depression, anxiety, gender dysphoria & sexual trauma.
I was creating works as radical performance artist, dancer, photographer, self portrait artist, professional stylist, creative director, choreographer, event producer & alternative fashion designer. I never felt satisfied with any of this though, and part of my journey even involved dissolving my identity as an artist & becoming a self-isolating, nobody, traveler.
What I discovered…
After a long process of reconnecting with Nature, shamanic healing sessions, months of solitude, more identity experiments, and especially unpacking the effects of an alcoholic father & religious trauma through psychotherapy, - I uncovered the transformative power of UNDERSTANDING WHY I had chosen this particular life path.
I realized that I had been performing a very eccentric kind of ritual magic, unconsciously learning about it through my own un-advised & self-guided process .
It is called many names by many people: Shapeshifting. Psychodrama. Psycho Magic. Drama Therapy. Expressive Art Therapy. SD Forum, and the names I have since come up with: Radical Transparency Practice, Costume Therapy, and my favourite of the moment: ‘Performance Heart.’
